Soapstone / Talc
Formula : Mg3Si4O10(OH)2
Description
Soapstone (also known as steatite or soaprock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is rich in magnesium.
RMCL's specialty Soapstone/ Talc plays an essential role in delivering smoothness, stability, and functional performance in multiple applications. It is available in various mesh size bearing whiteness 90% -98% +.
Key Highlights
- Excellent Lubricating Properties – Provides slip and smoothness in industrial processes.
- Extreme Softness – The softest mineral on Mohs scale, ideal for smooth finishes.
- High Thermal Resistance – Retains stability under heat, suitable for refractory use.
- Chemical Inertness – Safe, non-reactive, and widely used in sensitive industries.
- Multiple Forms – Available as natural blocks, powder, micronized, and industrial grades.
Core Applications
- Cosmetics – Widely used in talcum powder, face powders, and personal care products.
- Food Industry – Approved as a food additive (anti-caking agent, polishing agent).
- Metals Industry – Is used to create molds for casting objects from soft metals, such as pewter or silver. The soft stone is easily carved and is not degraded by heating. The slick surface of soapstone allows the finished object to be easily removed.
- Paints & Coatings – It is used as paint or an extender in paint industry. Acts as a filler, providing smoothness, sheen, and anti-corrosive properties.
- Pharmaceutical Industries – To remove impurities such as iron oxide, dolomite, carbon, magnesium and carbonate minerals.
- Paper Industry – Improves printability, brightness, and acts as a filler and coating agent.
- Rubber Industries – In rubber industry talc is used for two purposes, one to prevent rubber moulds from sticking and the other as compounding material in the preparation of certain types of hard rubber.
- Textiles Industries – It is used both for loading and bleaching certain types of cotton goods. Inferior grades are used in back filling textiles.
Extended Applications
- Agriculture – Improves fertilizer quality and soil conditioning.
- Ceramics & Refractories – Enhances strength, heat resistance, and finish in tiles and ceramics.
- Fertilizer Industries – For coating calcium ammonium fertilizer.
- Glass Industry – For alkali proof glass vessels and containers.
- Pesticides Industries – Used as a carrier of insecticidal and pesticide dusts.
- Rubber Industries – In rubber industry talc is used for two purposes, one to prevent rubber moulds from sticking and the other as compounding material in the preparation of certain types of hard rubber.
- Sculpture & Carvings – Used in artistic soapstone carvings and countertops due to softness.
- Stationary Industries – Is used in making crayons for marking purposes, for tailors' chalk and also used for making soft pencils.
- Textile, Plastic, Linoleum, Asbestos Products, Polishes and Soaps Industry – Used as a filler in these industries.
